Tiddler, Monkey Puzzle, The Smartest Giant In Town and A Squash and a Squeeze are all fantastic children’ stories. Each story has a moral and engaging, madcap characters. Enter Scamp Theatre, who have taken these stories and produced an energetic and creative show for young audience members.
With a basic, stripped back set, a cast of three, props that double up as puppets, plus singing and dancing too, this show is a must-see for children of all ages. The enthusiastic facial expressions, puppets and songs kept my toddler entertained. Older children were familiar with the tales and some were reciting along with the performers.
The recurrence of Monkey Puzzle throughout the production was a genius touch, I heard children around the auditorium asking their parents if monkey’s quest to find his momma had been forgotten!
The story of Tiddler was my personal favourite, I thought the puppetry was all consuming, to the point I was able to forget that the performers themselves were there. There’s clever use of lighting, too which re-gained my little boy’s attention at a stage where he had started to lose interest. Well timed tricks meant that he was engrossed right to the end of the show.
The cast were adept at bringing out the humour, serious undertone and creativity every step of the way. They worked brilliantly together and their team work definitely enhanced the piece. Julia Donaldson’s work is brought delightfully to life by Scamp Theatre and I’ll look out for more of their tours in the future.
