Not Going Out is back and the belly laugh inducing formula is still ever-present as we witness Lee (Lee Mack) and Lucy (Sally Bretton) dealing with family life. The last time we saw the newly weds, Lucy was pregnant, since then their family has grown by three, Benji (Max Pattison), Charlie (Finley Southby) and Molly (Francesca Newman). Back in the days when Lee was an Ice Cream man who never went out in the van that we probably only saw once, it was difficult to imagine this kind of life for him.
Lucy (Sally Bretton) was ever the business woman in her past life, but she has embraced motherhood in as much as she looks permanently tired, adds toast crumbs to her child’s orange juice and forgets her wedding anniversary. Lee shocks her by remembering and cooking a special meal, putting his wife on a back foot and scrabbling together a birthday cake and song from their children! Even though it’s not his birthday…
I think it’s going to be hilarious to continue to watch how their family life unfolds, the kids look like they are as quick witted as their father and it was great to see the return of Deborah Grant and Geoffrey Whitehead as Lucy’s parents. In fact it’s Geoffrey (Lucy’s dad) who has tipped Lee off about the wedding anniversary, naturally… dad is still hopeful that the marriage will fail!
It’s great to see the return of an easy going comedy which never failed to tap into my sense of humour before and still has the capacity to bring a big grin to my face now – this could be the way to beat the January blues.
