British Soap Awards 2018

The British Soap Awards are always a must-watch at Entertainment Views HQ, we are avid soap fans and love to find out who the public has chosen as their soap opera favourites. Hosted by Phillip Schofield, this was the first year the awards show had gone live and the selected venue – Hackney Empire Theatre was a good choice. The show ran to time, almost, slightly thrown off-kilter when 80’s small screen legends Cagney (Sharon Gless) and Lacey (Tyne Daly) arrived to announce the winner of Best Soap. Their banter was one of the highlights of the evening, it was fantastic to see the pair reunited.

Without further ado, here are the winners, together with Entertainment Views‘ opinion on the chosen ones:

Eastenders Round-Up ~ Week Commencing 8 May 2017

Is it me or does it feel like time has stood still since last week’s episodes of EastEnders? Problems remain the same, it seems and misery is ever-present, here are a few highlights:

Lauren is thrown when Steven turns up at her work. Josh (EDDIE EYRE), Lauren Branning (JACQUELINE JOSSA), Louie, Steven Beale (AARON SIDWELL) – (C) BBC – Photographer: Jack Barnes

Denise ~ Oh Denise, who’d have thought that life outside of the Minute Mart would be so doom-filled. If she’s not rowing with Kim, she’s wandering about the Square with a long face. Who’d have thought that Sharon would have shown compassion? Plus, who knows, maybe there’s some post-natal depression there.

Lauren’s Predicament ~ When Steven turns up at Lauren’s new workplace, and with Louie in tow – it’s rather #awks ! Lauren is playing a dangerous little game and her home-life colliding with her work-life is rather a messy situation. How long will she continue to hanker after Josh?

Whitney’s at her wits end ~ Whitney receives a visit from Moose, it appears that Lee is filing for divorce. It all happens for he, don’t it?! So what’s the best way of dealing with it? Move on to Woody!

Michelle’s Job Hunt ~ Denise is still struggling to find employment, of that we’re all painfully aware – but so is Michelle. How long will Ms Fowler be in the realms of the unemployed for? It seems we’ve yet to wait!

Abi’s Co-habiting habits ~ Abi is irritating her fellow housemates with her OCD, to the point where Ben is plotting a little playful revenge. However she soon trumps that with a cleaning schedule! I doubt this living arrangement will continue to be happy for long!

Eastenders Round-Up ~ Week Commencing 1 May 2017

Another joy filled week in Walford, culminating in a horrific stunt by the resident bullies – here are some highlights:

Denise tentatively asks Kim for some money back. Denise Fox (DIANE PARISH), Vincent Hubbard (RICHARD BLACKWOOD), Kim Fox-Hubbard (TAMEKA EMPSON) – (C) BBC – Photographer: Jack Barnes

Fit Beale ~ Jane’s bought Ian a present, there’s a few steamy looks passing between them until she reveals that it’s a fit bit! Cue Ian scheming to demonstrate that he is getting his thousands of steps in. Using his grandson wouldn’t be part of the deception would it? Oh yes it would!

Jane’s triumph ~ Once Ian has stopped cheating the fit bit, Jane shows him her ability to log some steps on her fit bit, and it’s a touching moment when Ian realises how far Jane has come. I can’t be alone in wishing for a full recovery for Mrs Beale?

Woody’s unpopular ~ Sacking Tracey from The Queen Vic? What on earth was Woody thinking! I loved the riot it kicked up and maybe he will think twice before he makes any further rash decisions, or maybe not! All hail Tracey, the heart of the Queen Vic Pub!

Jobs a good ‘un (or not…) ~ Denise and Michelle are both off to interviews, Denise’s interview is not quite as high-brow as she imagined, given that it ends up being a cleaning job. Michelle’s is yet another education based option. Either way, job hunting is not going well for either of them and Denise is on her knees financially. When will the girl get a break?

Party time ~ Louise thinks she’s having a pyjama party with her ‘lovely’ mates, they have other plans and Sharon’s house is turned into party central with a selection of invited guests rocking up, including Travis and Keegan. The cocktails that Louise is necking in an attempt to look cool aren’t as innocent as she thinks and disaster strikes leaving the troubled teen unconscious in the street and an ambulance on its way. I wonder when we’ll see an end to the bullying storyline? It could run and run because that would reflect real life, of course.

Eastenders Round-Up ~ Week Commencing 24 April 2017

Life in Walford has continues to be messy for its residents, with cunning plans unfolding and deceit in every corner of the Square, let’s look at some highlights…

Fi Browning (LISA FAULKNER) – (C) BBC – Photographer: Nicky Johnston

Ladies Night ~ New arrival, Woody is full of ideas, it seems and not all of them bad ones! His mates happens to be strippers, so a Ladies Night is planned and there are a few happy punters in The Vic that night, too. Let’s see if Woody can compete against Max Branning!

Derek’s hired! ~ Honey was starting to lose the will with her new ‘apprentice’, Derek – however despite many false starts from the well meaning pensioner, the pair have struck up a good working relationship. Whether Derek will always be able to have a handle on resident bully Keegan? Remains to be seen…

Investigations at The Vic ~ New character, Fi is on the prowl at the Queen Vic checking the books and generally stressing Shirl and co. out! Meanwhile Max continues to hover in the background until he can make his move. Troubling times ahead for the already scarred Carter family!

Abi’s house-share ~ Donna and Abi are busy cooking up a plot for Abi to move into the spare room in the shared house with Jay and Ben. Moving in with her two ex boyfriends doesn’t seem to faze the young Branning girl, however the boys are not so sure. Persuasive efforts go some way towards convincing them and even though Abi has had second thoughts about leaving Dot, it looks as though there will be a ‘Friend’ style living arrangement going on. It’s bound to be interesting!

Steven & Lauren ~ Over at The Beale house, Steven almost puts the mockers on Lauren’s second interview when he answers her mobile and claims that the caller has the wrong number! His plan is foiled when Lauren receives an email, but if Steven doesn’t want her to get the job and with her dad working against her too – Lauren’s career plans look doomed to fail.

Eastenders Round-Up ~ Week Commencing 17 April 2017

Sonia’s (Natalie Cassidy) back and inserting her trumpet into general conversation, again – as well as causing chaos as she tries to protect her daughter. Add a funeral and a spot of heckling at the Mayor into the mix and it all bodes well for a happy week in Walford! Here are some highlights…

‘Woody’ Woodward (LEE RYAN) – (C) BBC – Photographer: Nicky Johnston

Bump it with a trumpet ~ Sonia may be back fleetingly to see her bullied daughter. She may have wreaked a spot of havoc, too by launching herself at Sharon (Letitia Dean) in the Square – that was funny! However, why oh why does Sonia’s trumpet have to be brought up on every given opportunity? Cassidy’s returns are becoming a ‘spot the word trumpet’ game for yours truly!

New Character (Hands high when we fly by!) ~ Lee Ryan (from Blue!) has joined the cast as Woody, sent by Linda (Kellie Bright) to help out at The Vic. His arrival did not go down well initially but it seems that he is having a positive impact on the pub’s takings – so we’ll see…

Bullying ~ Sonia’s intervention has brought Bex’s (Jasmine Armfield) ordeal to a head and although Louise (Tilly Keeper) is let off (should she have been? I don’t think so!) the two main culprits have had some comeuppance. Although they look set to transfer their wrath to Louise. Possibly not wise, have they met Phil (Steve McFadden)?!

Funeral ~ It’s Sylvie’s funeral and Tina (Luisa Bradshaw-White) has gone all out and ordered a ‘MUM’ wreath from Billy (Perry Fenwick) at late notice. It seems rather extravagant when there is a distinct lack of turn out, but Shirl’s (Linda Henry) arrival heralds some sense of occasion and the pub is quite well patronised by Sylvie’s mates, so all is as it should be. RIP Sylvie!

Steven surprises Lauren by suggesting they shop for an interview outfit – his treat. Lauren Branning (JACQUELINE JOSSA), Steven Beale (AARON SIDWELL) – (C) BBC – Photographer: Jack Barnes

Lauren’s lament ~ Lauren (Jacqueline Jossa) is on tenterhooks as she awaits news of a potential interview. When she finally cottons on to the fact that the email may have gone to her spam folder, she is delighted to discover that she has been invited to the interview she has been pinning her hopes on. Steven (Aaron Sidwell) is supportive as ever, although his dreams of a family are somewhat dashed. On the day of the interview, Lauren arrives to discover that her photocopier man is not the photocopier man. Playing with fire, Lauren…

2017 Eastenders Round-Up ~ Week Commencing 10 April 2017

EastEnders has been packed with more juice than a blood orange and still the drama continues – here are a few of the highlights from Albert Square…

Alexandra D’Costa (SYDNEY CRAVEN) – (C) BBC – Photographer: Jack Barnes

Stacey’s Preggers ~ Stacey (Lacey Turner) has been trying to get pregnant again so that she can truly have a baby belonging to Martin (James Bye) and she’s succeeded. Baby Fowler is conceived and the couple couldn’t be more delighted as they decide to keep the news between themselves. With Jean (Gillian Wright) back on the scene (hooray, might I just say? I love Jean!) I can’t imagine that the news is going to be met with a full hoorah as we all know what happened to post-natal Stacey last time. Let’s see where they’re going with this pregnancy storyline for the character. It could be a bumpy ride (pardon the pun!).

Bex’s Bullies ~ Bex (Jasmine Armfield) suffers again at the hands of bullies; Louise (Tilly Keeper), Madison (Seraphina Beh) and Sydney (Alexandra D’Costa). Destroying Bex’s guitar is one step too far, but luring her into a false sense of security by having Madison make her believe that she has broken away from the gang and wants to be friends, ends in more than tears. Handing over a box of sweets to Bex as a peace offering, let’s just say the chocolate ones aren’t chocolate! Louise is obviously not happy to be a part of the bullying but it looks as though she can se no way out. The storyline is reminiscent of bullying suffered by a few fellow pupils when I was at school and I’m sure is extremely relevant today. Bullying should be highlighted and EastEnders are doing a grand job of that.

Michelle tries to make amends with Bex while she helps out in the Café, but is stopped when Madison, Alexandra and Louise enter. Michelle Fowler (JENNA RUSSELL), Bex Fowler (JASMINE ARMFIELD), Louise Mitchell (TILLY KEEPER) – (C) BBC – Photographer: Jack Barnes

Sonia’s back! ~ Sonia (Natalie Cassidy) returns when her daughter cries out for help as a result of her bullying hell. So, is mummy going to put a stop to it? How long is she staying for this time? And most importantly of all, where’s her trumpet? Hee hee…

Ian steps back ~ Ian (Adam Woodyatt) starts to consider stepping back from his business empire building as Jane (Laurie Brett) tries to convince him that spending more time together would be a better use of his time. Will the workaholic take his wife’s advice and start to become all about the pipe and slippers? It is Ian Beale we’re talking about, I’ll believe it when I see it!

Lauren & Josh ~ Lauren I(Jacqueline Jossa) is dolling herself up for a night out with the girls again and happens to mention to Josh (Eddie Eyre) which nightclub opening she will be at. Of course he turns up, but she bolshie Lauren bolts when her crush goes to kiss her. What game is she playing?

Eastenders Round-Up ~ Week Commencing 3 April 2017

Walford, Walford, Walford – what more can I say? Do you ever watch a week’s worth of EastEnders and wonder what it would be like if everybody was happy, just for once? I do, but it’s a fleeting thought! Here are the highlights…

Picture Shows: Sharon visits Michelle in hospital. Michelle Fowler (JENNA RUSSELL), Sharon Mitchell (LETITIA DEAN) – (C) BBC – Photographer: Kieron McCarron

Michelle’s misery ~ Michelle (Jenna Russell) is languishing in hospital following her alcohol-fuelled crash into the chippy. Sharon (Letitia Dean) is telling her what she wants to hear, for now. But it all begins to unravel as the week unfolds and reaches a pinnacle when the ‘cradle-snatcher’ comes face to face with her niece. Awkward! I have started to enjoy Jenna Russell’s performance as Michelle, I no longer compare to her to her predecessor anywhere near as regularly.

Lauren’s lured ~ Lauren (Jacqueline Jossa) goes out to meet Josh the photocopier man again, he’s got a job in mind for her that he thinks she should apply for and she’s up for it! Oh dear Lauren, I don’t think this is going to end well. Firstly, is she going to cheat on Steven (Aaron Sidwell) with him and secondly, he works at Max’s (Jake Wood) office and daddy doesn’t seem keen on his daughter working with him. I don’t trust Josh – are we being set up to see an explosive storyline? I do hope so!

Shirley’s release date ~ Shirl (Linda Henry) has the death of her mother to deal with, the circumstances in which they happened not exactly being the best either, if we’re honest! However, with her release date imminent at least she can get out and help her sister? It looks like Shirl might have put pay to that though when she turns on her intentionally irritating cellmate.

Meddling Max ~ Max has been behaving even more strangely than before since his return and he has also been conspicuous by his absence too. He now appears to be interfering in Stacey’s (Lacey Turner) life by sticking his nose in on her feud with Carmel (Bonnie Langford). Just what is he trying to achieve and isn’t it great to have him back? I am a huge fan of Jake Wood, he does that role justice.

Kush and Denise ~ I just wanted to air my views on the latest couple to pair off in Walford. Denise (Diane Parish) and Kush (Davood Ghadami). It almost feels like it hasn’t come out of the blue, yet it does feel like it’s come out of the blue too! So soon after Denise has given birth to and given birth to Phil’s (Steve McFadden) baby, just where is this relationship supposed to go and does Kush see Denise as a mother figure? I’m 50/50 over this one because I actually quite like them as a couple, too – something about this set up also makes sense! I’m still none the wiser now I’ve written down my thoughts. I’m intrigued…

Eastenders Round-Up ~ Week Commencing 27th March 2017

A revelation, a car crash with far-reaching consequences and a fatality – it’s all been going on in Walford and Sharon’s (Letitia Dean) backkkkkk! Here’s a few highlights:

Bex Fowler (JASMINE ARMFIELD) – (C) BBC – Photographer: Kieron McCarron

Michelle’s misdemeanours ~ During a party for Sylvie (Linda Marlowe) at The Vic, Bex (Jasmine Armfield) decides to let on that she knows the truth about Preston (Martin Anzor) and Auntie Michelle (Jenna Russell). She interrupts a song to shout it out to the gathering in the pub! Martin (James Bye) is flabbergasted and the repercussions look set to spread far and wide. After all, not only has Martin’s sister been sleeping with a lad almost 33 years her junior but she has done so knowing that the lad in question has been sleeping with her niece as well!

Kush’s krush ~ Kush (Davood Ghadami) has continued to pursue Denise (Diane Parish) until she halts his attentions with a declaration of friendship only. However, when Kush is a victim of Michelle’s drive through the chip shop, Denise changes her mind and ceases the day and the opportunity. Although Carmel (Bonnie Langford) had hoped that her son’s girlfriend was a doctor he’d met in hospital! Let’s see how long this relationship lasts!!

Chip shop carnage ~ The chip shop drive through mentioned above was the result of an intoxicated Michelle losing control of the vehicle she thought it was a good idea to take for a spin around the square. Kush, Kathy (Gillian Taylforth) who is working in the chippie at the time and of course, the driver herself, all come a cropper in the ensuing carnage. No fatalities to report but Michelle does end up coming off worst. Plus I expect that chip shop will be closed for as long as it takes Ian (Adam Woodyatt) to sort it out…

Picture Shows: Michelle is still inside the car. Michelle Fowler (JENNA RUSSELL) – (C) BBC – Photographer: Jack Barnes

Sharon shoots her mouth off ~ Sharon comes returns to sort out Michelle’s mess and attempts to shoo Preston off by giving him a cock and bull story about Michelle’s true feelings towards him. It seems to work and she has his plane ticket paid for without so much as a bye your leave. Whether that’s truly the last of the young lothario, remains to be seen. What will Michelle’s reaction to the news that her best friend has seen off her toy boy lover?

Farewell Sylvie ~ In scenes that had me hiding behind my hands as the end was in sight, an unsupervised Sylvie (Linda Marlowe) ran a late night bath, brought the radio in for company and exited Walford as a result. With devastating consequences and a heartbroken Tina (Luisa Bradshaw-White) beside herself that her mum may have cottoned on to the plans to put her into a care home and committed suicide. That wasn’t the case, as we saw, but it’s a sorry end for one of my favourite residents and what will Shirl (Linda Henry) say when news reaches the prison?

EastEnders Round-Up ~ Week Commencing 20th March 2017

EastEnders never has a week without misery does it? Despite the fact that it’s Ben’s (Harry Reid) 21st birthday, there’s still not much to raise a smile about! Here are a few key moments:

A merry Ben is happy at the size of the crowd. Ben Mitchell (HARRY REID), Jay Mitchell (JAMIE BORTHWICK) – (C) BBC – Photographer: Jack Barnes

Denise departs ~ …..only from the Minute Mart though! Denise (Diane Parish) has had more than enough after a chat with Head Office about training courses and all manner of other suggestions that she finds offensive sees her handing in her notice with no job to go to. Gotta love feisty Denise, though – there’s never a dull moment with her around and she has a confession from Kush (Davood Ghadami) to think on. It seems he doesn’t find her unattractive… boom chicka wow wow…

Yolande! ~ Yolande (Angela Wynter) was last seen in 2008 after leaving her philandering husband, Patrick (Rudolph Walker). In a well-kept secret move, she returned to tick off Denise about her customer service! Does this mean that she will be coming back again? I really hope so, I rather liked her and think Patrick could do worse than to have her back in his life.

Dennis the menace ~ Dennis (Bleu Landau) has been making a nuisance of himself to Auntie Michelle (Jenna Russell) quite successfully. He’s not giving up and she’s giving in! Even when it comes to her offer to bring home take away, he decides he doesn’t want pizza and instead requests fried chicken. Michelle foolishly offers to buy both! Then he’s calling her hurrying along, when is the boy going to desist? Not anytime soon I’ll wager…

Ben’s Birthday ~ Ben has the key of the door, never been 21 before – and it’s party time. He’s already feeling rather sorry for himself as Paul is not there to celebrate it with him and Pam and Les have remembered his big day by sending him a card, which stirs up memories. However, Jay (Jamie Borthwick) is soon teasing him about his lack of action in the bedroom and the party provides an opportunity for Ben to remedy this, with Johnny Carter (Ted Reilly). They’re both insistent that it was a one night stand in the cold light of day, but I actually think there’s something there and they’re not a bad match.

Whitney & Lauren sip their drinks as Whitney realises the real reason Lauren has dragged her to the bar. Lauren Branning (JACQUELINE JOSSA), Whitney Carter (SHONA MCGARTY) – (C) BBC – Photographer: Jack Barnes

Lustful Lauren ~ Lauren (Jacqueline Jossa)  has taken a fancy to another man, a fact that Whitney (Shona McGarty) is aware of. However, what Whitney is not prepared for is a night out at a cocktail bar that has been planned specifically so that Lauren can meet her crush. With Steven (Aaron Sidwell) trying to forge a bond with Max (Jake Wood), it appears that settling down is far from Lauren’s mind. Alarm bells are ringing (for me!) when she questions Jane (Laurie Brett) about her affair with Grant (Ross Kemp). It looks as though Lauren is experiencing a midlife crisis at the tender age of almost 23 years old!
